Ahh the iPad. A creature something in between a small laptop and a large iPod. If you’ve bought an electronic in the past decade, chances are you’ve probably owned an iPad. Launched in 2010, Apple is closing in on 500 million sold.

Tablet sales have lagged in general the past few years as Smartphones have really become an all-in-one device BUT the newer iPads really make a compelling case for people considering ditching their laptops. If you’re hoping for an iPad to replace your work computer, we’re probably not quite there yet. If you use your computer to surf the web, post baby pictures to Facebook and listen to tunes then now may be the time to make the switch.

Below we’ve tried to make the decision process easy, based on which models are best for you and how much you want to spend.

And if you’re upgrading, sell your old iPad to TechPayout and help pay for the new one!

iPAD

Who is it for? Kids/Everyone, Great for Gifting

What’s it all about? Call it the Goldilocks iPad (not too big, not too small), the standard iPad is what started it all in 2010. Great for shopping and watching videos, this iPad even now supports the Apple Pencil.

It’s the perfect size to take notes with a keyboard and can easily be carried around. You probably won’t get a better bang for your buck BUT the processor speed is limited and if you truly want to replace your laptop, you’d be better off buying an iPad Air or Pro. If you’re buying your child an iPad you probably do not want to purchase anything past the iPad Mini or iPad… as the Air and Pro are expensive toys that have a good chance of getting a cracked screen during a tantrum.

Current Generation: 7th

Operating System: 5th, 6th & 7th Gen will support the newest iPadOS

Price Range:
Wi-Fi models: 32 GB $329, 128 GB $429
Wi-Fi + Cellular models: 32 GB $459, 128 GB $559

iPAD AIR

What’s it all about? The iPad Air is light, fast and possibly your next laptop (connected with a keyboard case). The Air is not exactly cheap so if you like the size of it (9.7” – 10.5”) but want to save some coin, stick to the regular iPad.

Current Generation: 3rd

Operating System: 2nd & 3rd Gen will support the newest iPadOS

Price Range:
Wi-Fi models: 64 GB $499, 256 GB $649
Wi-Fi + Cellular models: 64 GB $629, 256 GB $779

iPAD PRO

Who is it for? People considering replacing their laptop, Musicians/Artists, Electronics Afficianados

What’s it all about? The Pro is the Cream of the Crop. The fastest processors and biggest/crispest screens will blow your mind but also blow a hole in your wallet (pricing maxes out over $2000 after taxes and accessories).

The smaller of the two sizes has changed since the first launch. In 2016 it was 9.7, in 2017 it was bumped up to 10.5” and now Apple has increased the size to 11”. The larger size though has stayed firm as 12.9”.

The 12.9” model is great for Artists/Doodlers taking full advantage of the Apple Pencil. It is though a bit large and doesn’t exactly sit perfectly on your lap. If you’re thinking about getting the larger model, make sure to really feel and hold one before laying out all that coin.

Current Generation: 3rd

Operating System: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Gen will support the newest iPadOS

Price Range:
11” Wi-Fi models: 64 GB – $799, 256 GB – $949, 512 GB – $1,149, 1 TB – $1,549
11” Wi-Fi + Cellular models: 64 GB – $949, 256 GB – $1,099, 512 GB – $1,299, 1 TB – $1,699
12.9” Wi-Fi models: 64 GB – $999, 256 GB – $1,149, 512 GB – $1,349, 1 TB – $1,749
12.9” Wi-Fi + Cellular models: 64 GB – $1,149, 256 GB – $1,299, 512 GB – $1,499, 1 TB – $1,899
