The Best “off-brand” Smartphones That Will Make You Look Twice (or thrice)

There are very few phones that can stand up to the likes of Apple’s iPhone or Samsung’s Galaxy series… or that’s what they’d like you to think. Especially the marketing teams for those respective powerhouses. I’ve run across a handful of no name devices that might make me think about trading my Galaxy Note 3!

#1- OPPO N1

This bad boy has the potential to be a game changer. A 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, a 13-megapixel camera with a six-element lens that swivels for the sharpest of selfies, and a 3610mAh battery! ! !  It can use 850/900/1800/1900MHz GSM frequencies and 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz WCDMA frequencies. No LTE support has been announced at this time, however. That is the only check mark in the detractors for me at this point.

A few innovative features… being that it such a huge phone (5.9″), the back of it has a touch sensitive area that people can use for scrolling without touching the front of the screen. AWESOME. Another unheard of feature out-of-the-box is offering Cyanogenmod (and ColorOS which is based on Android 4.2)
Lastly, the camera can be operated with a remote control and can take 8-second long-exposure photos. AWESOME!

So how much will this set you back? A mere $599. Not bad if you know how to sell your old phones for cash!

#2 – The Micromax Canvas TURBO….?

Yes… the Micromax Canvas TURBO:
Amazingly enough this manufacturer is based out of India and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) himself has been brought in to promote the company world-wide.
The Turbo is a 5-inch aluminum-clad smartphone with a 1,920 x 1,080 display that’s backed by a 1.5GHz MediaTek (?) chip and 2GB RAM. On the imaging front, there’s a 13-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front-facer, with Android 4.2 under the hood.
While the Micromax might not be truly innovative… the price point is break neck low at $325! I could seriously buy a his & her pair for what Samsung sells my Note 3 for.
Paired with the right prepaid plan, you won’t even miss your big name carrier &/or smartphone makers!

#3 – Goophone i5s:

Don’t worry iPhone fanatics. I haven’t forgotten the likes of you! Still having a hard time getting your hands on the Kardashian? Goophone… the company that brings low end Android specs to Apple’s iPhone 5s?!? Madness!
Product description directly from their website:

“Goophone has always been forward thinking . With new design, this new Goophone i5S you have never seen it. Goophone i5S is super slim aluminium body, the better to bring its gold color to life. Because of the better processor and flash, so Goophone i5S feels solid and smooth operating experience by your hand.”

“Along with an 1.2GHz MTK MT6572 dual-core cortex-A7 processor, MediaTek’s MT6572 is the world’s first dual-core SoC with integrated Wi-Fi, FM, GPS and Bluetooth functions….”

Ok… and? Right… it’s $159 direct from China where apparently there is no such thing as trademark infringement. It is quite literally a master clone of the much coveted iPhone 5s. (Kind of hilarious actually-sorry folks)

You could probably buy 3 or even 4 off these beauties if you sold your iPhone for cash RIGHT NOW. You might even be able to use your old 5s cases on them to boot! How great is that!

You may want to brush up on your Mandarin-Chinese though. Just a thought.
